Yaari.com - Free Social Networking Site in India or is it?

Somehow managed to get access to Yaari.com through a friend’s ID. So here is a screenshot depicting the very obvious features of any social networking site.

Yaari-Features

Unlike Fropper, this site is free. The obvious question is how does a free social networking site survive, online advertising?, no, Prerna Gupta - CEO yaari.com is smarter! (our absolute faith in this, forced us to think and led to some more research).

So here are the screenshots that strike the chord.

Yaari-Mobile Tour

Yaar- Mobile Features

The revenue comes from sms, tie up with Mobile Carriers in India, get a part of money user spends on receiving an sms (the standard rate in India is approx Rs.5 per sms, and typically carrier would not mind giving a rupee to a partner) from web and cash in on the volumes.
Smart as it might seem, but again the “Idea” in itself isn’t at all original. Yaari.com appears to be inspired by SMS.ac (A San Diego based Social Networking company with a registered user base of over 50 million in over 180 countries - Source). Sms.ac has more features than yaari has, but then they are moving in the right direction. Alerts and SMS messaging itself would amount to a lot of revenues.

Seems, Yaari.com has come up with an indianized version of SMS.ac. But that’s what has been happening in the consumer internet market in India. SMS volumes in India are unbelievably high, Just to give us a hint

SMS messaging is huge in India. I am sure yaari will pick up a decent market share in the days to come. But as SMS messaging gets even more cheaper, they would have to figure out other ways to generate revenue.

I was looking for an Indian site that can combine news, movies, cricket and also social networking aspects such as forums, blogs, private messages etc. I stumbled upon http://www.hangoutwith.com and found to be great! Hangoutwith.com is a good social networking site especially for Indians and it is much cleaner that other sites such as orkut, tagged etc. I agree that it is still in Beta and need to get fine tuned. But I am sure that people at hangoutwith.com are doing their best to get there!

    Give it a Spin!

Why not join an Indian network which connects Indians Globally, rather than regionally? Indomeet - Connecting Indians in US and Beyond! Divided into sections titled Health, Wealth, Social and Family, IndoMeet (available online at http://www.indomeet.com) is designed to enable Indians to connect with each other online. The web site also caters to specific Indian tastes and interests, whether it involves tips for investing in India, finding the nearest temple, starting a family, or the latest yoga technique. The new social networking section allows members to create their own web site, network, blog, and post photographs and videos online. They can create special interest groups and maintain an online calendar. Members can invite others to join the community, growing it organically and drawing the network even tighter. IndoMeet features a comprehensive Yellow Pages section as well as a travel guide. Members can sign up to receive free e-newsletters about India-related news as well as new updates and offers on the web site. IndoMeet’s charity section allows members to enhance the lives of others by featuring Indian social work organizations that could use a helping hand. The web site also has a shopping portal with secure online billing as well as a section on Indian entertainment news.

Wanna join yaari ? Are you nuts ?

Do you know that yaari.com logs on to your e-mail account with the information you give during sign up and steal e-mail addresses from your contact book ? Then they send e-mails to every one on your contact list, using your e-mail ID.

Imagine your boss, customer or business associate on your contact database getting an e-mail that says “… is your yaar”.

    Hi

If yaari.com does what is stated above, it is very bad and cheap tactics on its part. In my view, such cheap methods only work to bring bad name to the Internet Marketing community in general, and social marketing niche in particular.

I, therefore, avoid such methods and stick to real and genuine methods only. When there are so many ways to earn sincere income, there is no need as such to resort to such tactics. I, as a owner of www.utkalbandhu.com, Worl’d First Social Networking site for Orissa, understand and appreciate the values associated with such a venture. I will never forget, nor should anybody else, that members are not only putting their details in our hands, they are putting their faith with us. It is our duty to look after them, and their faith.

We should always keep in mind that money lost can be recovered, but faith and reputation cannot be recovered once lost.
